An Interview with Anthony Medina

RM: alright.. let’s talk SWAG… interview time buddy
ANT: haha okay
RM: damn i just got called for to fly,but we have time
ok so first things first… why make a video?
ANT: Aight, Well when I got back into the game I immediately had the itch to make another video. I never thought it’d be possible just because I don’t skate/travel as much as I used to. Angela actually suggested I do it and I didn’t really hesitate. That day I started searching for cams and thinking of what I wanted to do (though I had an idea).
RM: ok so you started with an idea, did that idea make its way to the final product?
ANT: Not at all really. The profiles I wanted to do were on Pat Leal, Micah Yeager, Jason Zwack and Rob Z. Pat had other stuff going on, Micah doesn’t really skate and Jason ended up having to move back to Corpus, making it hard to film him. Rob worked out tho, which I never doubted. I wanted to focus on the old school guys because that was who I was most familiar with
RM: and you ended up with a lot of newer faces like Mason, Dench (Logan), and Ian

ANT: Yup but it worked out. I didn’t really know any of them when I asked them to have parts but now I consider them good friends. While I was filming Mason’s Remz edit I was just amazed how good he was and I constantly thought, “Damn, this footage could be going into my video.” So before we finished his edit I asked if he’d be willing to do a part for the video, he was down. With Ian, Rob basically asked him before I even knew him. I met him later and things just clicked. He was great to film. Dench I have always been a fan of and after his edit Shannon made, I knew I wanted him to be a part of the video.
sounds like things almost fell into place.

RM: ok and now why call it SWAG? People were back and forth about it, and i’m sure you know that would be the case before you announced it
ANT: Yeah me and Rob were brainstorming video titles. He suggested Swagger Yields Finesse (a SYF abbreviation). I suggested we cut it down to just SWAG and we both loved it. I always wanted it to be something short, something recognizable and also something a bit cocky.
RM: Any funny stories or crazy stories while filming?

ANT: Nothing out of the ordinary. Just a couple criminal trespass warnings and a lot of fun.

The trips to CC were pretty awesome as you could imagine. The Kevin/Joseph battle at St. James drop rail was probably the funniest thing that went down. http://vimeo.com/7258268
RM: haha that was pretty funny. Speaking of funny… let’s talk about the intro skit. Can we expect an outtakes edit? haha
ANT: Honestly there weren’t a lot of outtakes. Rob took that shit really serious and we knocked it out pretty quickly for basically freestyling the whole thing. The funniest outtake was the piece I put in the credits.
RM: that’s exactly why i asked. Oh well. Rob made me laugh enough at the premier and after party. How stoked were you at the turn out for the premiere?

ANT: I was actually really surprised at the turnout. We had ppl come in from all over Texas it was awesome. A lot of new faces (for me at least) and I met a lot of new ppl. The reaction to the video was really positive there was a lot of in-video cheering, I was surprised. I’m just glad I could show every1 what these guys have been doing on their skates. They deserve the coverage.

RM: Agreed, the whole state does. Looking forward to Gogo’s LST video? its ok you can be honest here… its the internet and gogo is weak! (jk love you gogo)
ANT: Haha. Nah Gogo is a super good guy. I see Dench, Mason and Ian all the time but I can’t wait to see the other guys sections. Gogo’s been working on the video a while and I’m sure it’s gonna be worth the wait.
RM: Alot is going on in Texas right now, LST video, BMO video in the works, and AU by Glow also…
ANT: Yeah and then you got your video coming up soon. It’s cool, Texas skating is the shit and ppl need to see that.
RM: For now its the “Summer Shoot” in brownsville to be the launch off. Any shout outs, thank yous, or closings? Thanks for taking some time out to answer these, and again the video was sick and event was great.

ANT: I’d like to thank you for doing the interview and always being supportive since I met you. Dench, Ian, Michael, Mason and Rob for wanting to be a part of the video. SDSF for being the only shop to carry the video and for just being the best shop in the biz. JGlow for the contributed footage and Dominic for the footage, the skit edit and so much more. Everybody in SYF and just all my friends in general. Everybody who came to the premiere or bought the video, thanks for all the support with SWAG.
